The maps, coats of arms etc. which you will find on these pages are intended as free study material for those, interested in historical geography. However, the Hic Leones CD contains information on many more locations than you can see on these maps.
During digitization, we have optimized the graphic files so that they
(a) kept their beauty; please pay your respect to the map engravers of the Bibliographischen Institut in Leipzig ! Praise to these artists !
(b) remain readable down to the detail.
(c) require a minimal file size (in byte) to fulfil (a) and (b), but they are still quite big so be patient with the downloading.
Feel free to help yourself: just study the maps on-screen or make your downloads for your own studies ... and please tell your friends about it !
If not indicated otherwise, these maps, coats of arms, flags, and guild insignias are documented in books from about 1880-1898.
If you like the idea to have free access to these cultural goods and if you have the intention to contribute to the preservation of historical books, please see your local librarian for the possibility to "adopt a book". The following links about Buchpatenschaften bei einer Bibliothek only refer to German and Austrian libraries (but we will find some similar programs for you in the UK or USA !)
I just want to look at the maps on-screen:
- Left-click on the thumbnail picture of your choice to see the map (in a new window) in full size.
- When you are done, please close this window (click on the [X] in the right upper corner of the window frame), and you will be back in the Archive.
Hint: It depends on the type of your internet connection (modem and access), how fast the map file will be shown on your screen.
I would like to download the maps to my computer:
- Left-click on the thumbnail picture of your choice to see the map (in a new window) in full size.
- Right-click on the enlarged map.
- Choose "save image as ..." and indicate into which directory you would like to download the file.
- When the download process is terminated, please close the window (click on the [X] in the right upper corner of the window frame), and you will be back in the Archive (some browsers automatically close the window after the download).
1. Hint: The map files have sizes of about 0.8 - 2.5 MB, i.e. download with older, slower modems may take 1-3 min.; in this case, please be patient !
2. Hint: If you want to look at and work with the map files on your computer, Hic Leones suggests to use the absolutely fabulous IRFAN-VIEWER, which you can download for free from the web. Using this excellent program, you can zoom in and out of the map, select and cut out sections and print it out your way. Enjoy looking, researching and understanding !
